Re: UK Collaborative Study to Determine the Genetic Basis of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.
Number: 08/H0305/45
At the present time the cause of PSC is as yet not known. However, it is believed that genetic factors may be important in the cause of this disease. We are currently collaborating in a UK-wide study trying to find those genetic factors that cause PSC. If the study is successful, researchers may have a better chance of developing more effective treatments for this disease and understanding what causes PSC. In order for this project to be successful we will need the help of all patients who have PSC to participate, and this is the reason we are asking for your help.
Patients taking part in this study will be asked to donate either a blood sample or a saliva sample, so researchers at Cambridge can extract the DNA from this sample, and use it to potentially find the genes that cause PSC.
If you are interested in participating in the study, please contact the investigators in Cambridge. You can do this by e-mail (simon.rushbrook@addenbrookes.nhs.uk) or write to the above address. Please give your name and contact details.
When the investigators in Cambridge have heard from you, they will send you a recruitment pack containing further information about the study, and either a saliva collection kit (with instructions), or a blood form and blood bottles (with instructions) and a questionnaire.
Please note that by contacting the investigators in Cambridge, it does not mean you have agreed to take part in the study. You make your final decision to participate when you have received the recruitment pack.
Once again, many thanks for taking the time to read this and we look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Dr S.M. Rushbrook
On behalf of Roger Chapman, Graeme Alexander and the UK PSC Consortium.
